Developing learning of English vocabulary and retention through edutainment

The study aimed at determining the effect of an edutainment program in developing primary stage students’ learning and retention of English vocabulary. The study adopted a quasi-experimental method employing two groups. The participants of the study were 112 sixth grade students at New Kima Primary School in Aswan Governorate. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: An experimental group (N=56), and a control group (N=56). A Vocabulary Test was prepared and administered by the researcher to both groups before and after the experiment. The experimental group was taught vocabulary through the edutainment program, while the control group was taught the same vocabulary using the steps provided in the teacher’s guide. The experiment lasted for six weeks during the second term of the school year 2022/2023. The Vocabulary Test was post administered to the two groups. The statistically analyzed data confirmed a large effect size (0.91) of the edutainment program on developing vocabulary learning. The delayed vocabulary test was administered to the two groups after one month of the end of the experiment. The statistically analyzed data confirmed that there was a slight decrease in the mean of the experimental group on the delayed vocabulary test, but the scores were still higher than those of the pre administration of the Vocabulary Test. Based on these results, it was revealed that the experimental group developed their vocabulary learning and vocabulary retention because of teaching them vocabulary by using the edutainment program.
